When kids are head back to school and families are adjusting to the early morning rush, it’s important to remember one of the most important aspects of the back-to-school season: safety. Whether you’re a student, parent, or driver, here are some suggestions to help make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely.

1. Plan Ahead and Give Yourself Extra Time in the Morning, So You’re Not Rushed

Morning traffic is often the most dangerous time to be on the road. To avoid the stress of being late and the dangers of speeding, consider waking up earlier than you need to so you have time to get ready and leave for school in good time. You should also map out your route the night before and give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go.

2. Obey the Speed Limit, Especially in School Zones and Neighborhoods

With more kids walking and biking to school, it’s important to remember to slow down, especially in areas with lower speed limits. School zones usually have a reduced speed limit during certain hours, so be sure to obey those signs.

In residential neighborhoods, keep an eye out for children who might dart out into the street without looking.

3. Pay Attention to Buses

School buses are big and can be hard to see around, so it’s important to give them plenty of space on the road. When approaching a bus that is stopped to pick up or drop off kids, always come to a complete stop. If you’re driving behind a bus, don’t pass it until it has turned off its flashing lights and started moving again.

4. Treat Crossing Guards with Respect

Crossing guards are there to help keep kids safe as they walk to and from school, so it’s important to follow their instructions. When you see a crossing guard with their stop sign out, always come to a complete stop and wait until the children have completely crossed the street before proceeding.

5. Don’t Pass Other Vehicles in a School Zone

Not only is it generally illegal to pass other vehicles in a school zone, it’s also dangerous. For one, you might not be able to see around the other vehicle to spot pedestrians or cyclists. Secondly, if the other driver is making a sudden stop, you could end up rear-ending them. It’s safer for everyone if you stay in line and wait your turn.

As you wait for your turn, don’t double park or block a crosswalk, as it makes it harder for pedestrians and vehicles to see each other.
